Event Description

Support and Engage Adult and Online Students Through the Application Of Appreciative Advising

Adult and online students face multiple challenges as they navigate their higher education experience. Adult students are at risk for departure due to the multiple demands that they are challenged with managing on a daily basis. Online students may feel isolated and unsupported by the institution and, as a result, may lack the resilience that is necessary to persist in their studies. These challenges can serve as negative catalysts that can threaten to derail students and prevent them from attaining their goals. The Appreciative Advising® framework provides advisors a way to positively support these students in the attainment of their goals through focusing on student strengths and successes instead of their weaknesses and failures.

In this session expert speaker Sue Ohrablo will examine real-life scenarios that explore the challenges that adult and online students face and strategies for positively supporting them and engaging them through the application of appreciative advising. By infusing appreciative advising into interactions with students, you will be able to reinforce positive thinking and actions that will contribute to your students’ success.
