Event Description

Learn the Approaches for Effective Advising and Better Student-Advisor Interactions

Academic advising is a process whereby advisors build relationships with students and provide relevant and timely information to support their educational and career planning. But no two students are alike, so how can advisors be most effective and provide for the needs of all students?

Advisors need to be aware of what students are looking for in advisors. To be effective, academic advisors must be accessible, caring, and knowledgeable and use a variety of tools to provide academic and career advising. Effective advising sessions move through five basic steps for effective advisor and student interactions. When these things are in place, then a toolbox of advising approaches provides the tools to assist students.

In this session, expert speaker Dr. Joanne K. Damminger will focus on the need to use a variety of approaches in advising sessions, including career advising, with an emphasis on the developmental approach – the foundation for other approaches. Developmental advising considers the whole student including personal, academic, and career planning needs, and is designed to help students obtain their goals: to move from where they are now to where they want to be.

This session will discuss the importance of student learning outcomes for advising. All advising programs need student learning outcomes and measurements to assess them for continual improvement. Learning outcomes are also important so that students can recognize the value of academic advising to the successful completion of their educational and career goals.
