Science teachers are accustomed to the ideas of inquiry, the nature of science, and content knowledge. However, the Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS) uses the term "practices of science" as a covering term for these more familiar ideas. Given the long-standing promotion of inquiry instruction in the science education community, there is some confusion as to why the NGSS now focuses on the "practices of science." It will be important for teachers to understand the difference between these terms as well as how inquiry is incorporated under the idea of the practices of science.
