Get an understanding of student success data relating to new student orientation

The number of students who have turned to online classes has grown significantly in the last decade, but unfortunately the retention rates for those students hasn’t been as high as some would like. In fact, it is sometimes lower than the in-person version of that same course. The reasons for this unfortunate phenomena are numerous, ranging from academic work load to life in general. One way to potentially counter these factors and increase retention is an orientation conducted before the start of class. An orientation for online learning can potentially remove many of the barriers like, such as technical needs and time management, which may prevent the student from succeeding in their pursuit of their degree.

The specific decisions made by academic orientation leaders, regardless of what method they embrace, must be focused on the “why”: why we do what we do and why the results that come with those decisions matter? Developing a purpose, expressing specific values, and discussing specific frameworks for why we do something will be at the center of this presentation. Specific focus will be on knowing your cohort, as well as the impacts your plans has on their needs.

In this session, expert speaker Kent Seaver will outline steps that have been successful in higher education for the purpose of replication: if one college can do it maybe another can learn from it.

In general, a comprehensive online orientation allows students to become more comfortable with a college’s online learning environment. Specifically, the goals of most orientations are to create a sense of welcome, familiarize students with available campus resources, and introduce the student to college life. In an online orientation, the learning management system can be part of the focus, and this allows for student feedback which can assist the institution as they plan going forward.
