Over the last 20 years, even as the number of Americans attending college has grown significantly, retention and completion rates have stagnated, especially with at-risk student populations—despite a plethora of “student services” based programs designed to address the problem.

As a result, we’re not seeing the numbers of people emerging from the other end of the pipeline with college degrees that we had hoped. And all of this is happening despite a revolving menu of retention initiatives on the student services side. Perhaps that’s because, as studies have shown, one of the main factors determining whether or not students persist is their experience in the classroom.
