Event Description

Learn Multidisciplinary Skill Sets for Incorporating Computer Science in Classroom Instruction

Like all initiatives in education, incorporating computer science (CS) topics like coding into instruction requires educators to take practical steps for learning concepts and also a system(s) for measuring their progress when participating in professional development and working with students.

Join this session with master teacher and creator of the coding and electronics incorporation project Jorge Valenzuela for an account of the essential multidisciplinary skill sets that teachers need to begin developing for incorporating CS topics into their instruction. Jorge will discuss the primary coding principles and use of technology tools that teachers can begin utilizing to build their capacity for assisting students with mastering performance of critical CS standards and essential competency skills.

If you are new to introducing CS content to students, you will learn the importance of setting the appropriate learning goals and objectives for your learners. You will also learn to assess your knowledge of the material and skills needed for effective CS teaching and practical steps to take for researching, learning, playing and testing appropriate technology tools either individually or with a colleague(s).

This session will help you, as an educator, employ best practices for teaching learners’ coding and use of technology tools (like electronics) during either inquiry or design challenges. You will be able to apply these best practices  in many classrooms across various content/program areas by engaging learners experientially in these complex skills through design and inquiry practices.

Jorge will share authentic examples, best practices, and resources for helping you get started with mastering topics in computer science, coding and technology tools. Jorge will highlight exemplary programs and models, and will outline the resources available for educators.
