Event Description

Learn How to Develop A Summer Bridge Program to Serve Your Students’ Needs

Summer bridge programs are a common approach to plugging the leaks in the college pipeline, but in order to measure their impact on student success, clear program goals, student learning outcomes, and assessment measures must be in place. This session by expert speaker Paz Maya Oliverez will provide you with guidance on how to develop a summer bridge program to serve your students’ needs, as well as assessment strategies for summer bridge programs to leverage program outcomes data to support student success.

Effective summer bridge programs infuse various elements to ensure that students make a real connection to the campus. To make sure the program model and components you have chosen are appropriate for achieving your program goals, multiple considerations must be made. For example, you must consider target group, timing, duration, program content, program capacity, and much more. This session will provide practical strategies for developing and implementing all these elements into a successful summer bridge program tailored to the needs of your students and campus. In addition, you will learn how to develop student learning outcomes and assessment measures to demonstrate program impact.

After attending this session, you will be better able to identify the appropriate model for a summer bridge program that supports the needs of your students. You will learn how to apply a holistic approach to implementing summer bridge that not only uses academic advisers and peer mentors, but also includes career exploration, study skills workshops and a host of other high-impact practices. Summer bridge programs like the one Paz Maya will describe here can supplement existing programmatic and institutional efforts to support student success, while demonstrating the impact of co-curricular efforts through the implementation of sound assessment measures.
